Chapter Ten

~ Alphie ~

Bundled in jackets, because even vampires got cold in North Dakota’s February weather, Bellamy and I wandered through the settlement like tourists. I’d never been here, and of course, neither had she, so we were taking in all the sights.

My senses were hyper-vigilant as I sought out any threat that might be in the vicinity. Of course, my mate would sense danger coming, but the need to protect her had seeped into the deepest most innate parts of me. At the same time, I couldn’t keep her locked away in our lodgings until we were on the road again. Since she’d pointed out that sign, a sense of foreboding had ridden me and I couldn’t shake it.

“That’s the coffee shop owned by Cara and her mate Duncan. The diner next door belongs to Nicole and her mate Dougall. Dougall and Duncan are Scottish and brothers. They’re werewolves.”

I nodded looking at the storefronts as we walked. Since most of us were nocturnal, business hours were tailored for that. There were plenty of people out and about while Bellamy and I walked. “Do you mind if we head over to Gar’s shop?” I asked.

“No, of course not. We’re still staying if it’s fixed, right?”

“I promised we would. Not long until your birthday, huh? Are you excited about turning twenty-one.”

She side-eyed me, and I realized it was a really dumb question.

“Am I turning twenty-one? Am I?” she asked, though her tone was full of humor. She seemed a lot happier and settled in her new status since we’d come here. And I wondered… Was this someplace we were supposed to be? As a couple? I’d always been solitary, but that was a choice, not a necessity. It wasn’t that I didn’t like others. I just… I didn’t interact well. But maybe with practice?

“Yes, you are. You’re a vampire, but we’re not exactly dead, remember?”

“Maybe that’s why vamps are called undead,” she offered. “And…as much as I like to tease you, I wasn’t excited about my birthday before. I was going to be alone, probably working, and no one would have even known there was anything special about that day. But now…” She shrugged one slim shoulder, one I remembered biting recently. Right at the base of her neck where— “Now, I’m not alone. I have you…and the girls. Friends. Though I’m not sure that Allie will be around for my birthday.”

My hand tightened on hers, because she’d told me about the Chosen Run. I was…relieved that she didn’t have to go through that. That she was mine.

For now.

What could I do to get her to bite me before the connection reversed? I knew there were ways to make it happen, but I refused to trick her. She’d told me about her friend having that happen…her friend, the pregnant vampire. I glanced at Bellamy’s belly and imagined what that would be like.

“I’m glad you have friends here,” I told her.

“I think you could have them here, too.”

“I am considering that.” Would
